James Harrison Coburn, 31 Ağustos 1928 tarihinde ABD, Nebraska eyaleti Laurel şehrinde doğmuştur. Kaliforniya, Compton’da büyüdü. Compton Junior College’de okudu. New York‘da Oprestijli Stella Adler Theatre okulda oyunculuk eğitimi aldı. Daha sonra da Los Angeles‘da Los Angeles City College ve Güney Kaliforniya Üniversitesi’nde oyunculuk eğitimi aldı. 1950 yılında orduya katıldı. Kore Savaşı’nda görev yaptı. Askerliği bittikten sonra Güney California Üniversitesi sinema kurslarına devam etti. TV de ve tiyatroda çalıştı. 1959 yılında sinemaya başladı. 1960 yılında çevirdiği The Magnificent Seven (Muhteşem Yedili) filminde Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn ve Charles Bronson ile kamera karşısına geçmiştir. 1963 yılında ise II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında bir esir kampından toplu kaçışı konu alan “The Great Escape” filminde yine Charles Bronson ve Steve McQueen ile birlikte oynadı. 1998 yılında çekilen “Affliction” filmindeki rolü için 1999 yılında en iyi yardımcı aktör dalında Oskar ödülü kazanmıştır. James Coburn, iki defa evlendi. İkinci eşi Paula’dır ve bir oğlu vardır. James Coburn, 18 Kasım 2002 tarihinde Kaliforniya, Beverly Hills’deki evinde 74 yaşında kalp krizinden öldü.
